Villa Medica is the first French-speaking establishment in Canada to have complied with the requirements of the Distinction – Stroke Services program of Accreditation Canada, in March 2014.
Villa Medica Rehabilitation Hospital offers rehabilitation services to people who have the following neurological disorders:
- stroke
- Guillain-Barré syndrome
- multiple sclerosis
- other neurological conditions (partial paralysis affecting the lower limbs, vascular stenosis, removal of a tumor with a favorable diagnosis)
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
Stroke strikes thousands of people every year in Quebec. The following consequences may occur:
- partial paralysis
- walking problems
- limited use of one arm or leg
- difficulty communicating (speaking, understanding, reading, writing)
- difficulty concentrating, paying attention, remembering, etc.
- visual disturbances
- difficulty swallowing (to swallow)
It is a traumatic and stressful experience for the person affected, but also for their family. The interdisciplinary team of the neurology program understands this well and puts its expertise at the service of the well-being of the user.
“The rehabilitation stay aims to achieve maximum autonomy in daily activities”.
Successful rehabilitation, however, requires that the affected person has the will to make the necessary efforts to participate in the various exercises and treatments provided by the therapists.
Approach
Upon arrival at Villa Medica, the affected person is taken care of by an interdisciplinary team which:
- assess his condition
- identifies their needs
- develops an adapted rehabilitation program
Interventions begin as soon as possible, in order to maximize recovery.

Clinical team members of Villa Medica work in close collaboration for the well-being of the user and emphasize optimal communication with the user and his relatives. The team dedicated to the neurology program brings together the expertise of stakeholders in:

The active participation of the user is necessary, which is why he is encouraged to take part in the decisions concerning his treatment. Exercises and activities adapted to their needs, skills and interests will be offered for, among other things:
- recover motor skills (in affected limbs, posture, balance, walking)
- performing functional activities (bathing, dressing, cooking, housekeeping, etc.)
- work on concentration, attention, memory and visual disturbances
- regain autonomy in communication
- develop new ways of doing things

Discharge and follow-up
During their stay, and according to their abilities, the user can return home on weekends or on other occasions. These outings are part of the rehabilitation process. These visits allow:
- to plan the return home
- to assess the user’s achievements
- modify certain treatments
- identify the technical aids that facilitate the performance of certain activities (bars in the bathroom, specialized accessories for the kitchen, mobility aids, etc.)
- to ensure a safe return
If necessary, social service professionals and the liaison nurse can guide the user towards home care and support services: CLSCs, hospitals and day centres, community organizations and various government programs. If the user’s condition requires home care, the liaison nurse will call the CLSC concerned. At the time of discharge, an exercise program and recommendations are given to the user so that he can continue his rehabilitation.
